Abstract
The procedure and results of a study conducted on the spinal position of a series of live subjects resting on various sleepware designs are presented. The shapes of the spines were measured by passing a sonic echoing device over the subjects while the were in supine and fetal positions. The data were compared with spinal shape data collected while the subjects were in a physiologically efficient erect position. The results of the study indicate that the closer the sleepware keeps the spine to its normal erect position, the greater is the reduction in the lower back muscle utilization while resting in the supine and fetal positions
