Abstract
This paper addresses the issue of what is an open architecture robot controller. Three different classifications are defined along with the various advantages and shortcomings of each approach. Knowledge from past research and new technology development have been included in this analysis. The conclusions recommend a communication-based hybrid approach with well defined interfaces between modules
