  • Abstract
    The authors describe a low-cost PC-based data-acquisition system for nondestructive evaluation of ceramics using acoustic microscopy. A flash digital peak-detector-encoder, an accumulator-shifter, and a buffer memory enable the system to use 50-100 MHz ultrasonic transducers for detecting surface nonuniformities on the order of a few tens of micrometers. The system can display an image having a variable number of rows and up to 4096 columns of pixels, each of which is obtained by averaging from 1 to 4096 peak data at the corresponding scan position. The total response time for the present choice of comparators and flip-flops is approximately 12 ns for detecting a peak analog voltage
