Abstract
An application of the transformer-assisted PWM zero-voltage switching pole inverter (TRAP) is described in this paper. The TRAP is based on the auxiliary resonant commutated pole inverter (ARCP), but avoids its disadvantages. This paper describes the converter functionality and its applicability with regard to power and switching frequency in a high bandwidth linear motor drive. Also, details concerning magnetic design and the control system are presented. Lastly, the paper shows a comparison between hard and soft-switching with respect to efficiency and EMC. The theoretical results are verified with a 4.5 kW full-bridge inverter topology.
