Abstract :
This paper discusses the potential of using a flexible optical network layer within a transmission network. Issues relating to the management and control of such a network are described and practical results based on the RACE II Multi-Wavelength Transport Network demonstrator are given. In conclusion, practical routes towards implementing an optical network layer are discussed
