Abstract
The computing power and hardware resource of mobile devices are limited due to the small form-factor. To overcome the limitation and to maximize utilization of the mobile devices, service-based mobile applications are emerging. Current approaches to monitoring mobile applications do not address the characteristics of service-based mobile applications at the right level of technical details. Hence, we propose an effective framework for monitoring service-based mobile applications. We first identify three technical challenges in monitoring SMAs. Based on the definition and challenges, we determine design criteria for efficiently monitoring service-based mobile applications. By considering the criteria, we design the framework with functional and concurrency view. And then, we propose four patterns to gather monitored data and their appropriate situations for applying the patterns to monitoring. To validate the efficiency of the framework and its pattern, we conduct an experiment by utilizing proof-of-concept implementation of the framework.
