  • Abstract
Lightning is usually one of the leading causes of interruption on distribution systems. This is especially true in areas with high ground flash densities. There are many factors that influence whether a lightning strike causes a flashover on a distribution line. This paper looks at what these influences are. It also looks at different methods to mitigate these influences. This gives the engineer or planner the tools needed to make the best decision for protecting their lines from lightning strikes
