Abstract :
A method for restoring ATM cross-connect virtual path-based networks from failures is proposed that offers a high service survivability at a moderate cost. Since the method assumes storing some information at a number of network nodes, it is called guided restoration (GR). This information is used for instructing a network how to use its spare (common access) resources in an effective way among a number of VP restorations. GR is described by rules of the principal protocol and its applications. The principal protocol has been designed as a trade-off between protocol execution time, VP restoration efficiency, and amount of the spare resources required. An example performance evaluation of GR is enclosed
