Abstract
According to the characteristics of the map images, a practical data compression system was introduced. The main idea of this system is to segment the map image into two images: longline image and the rest short-line image. For the first one, we use the cubic B-spline interpolation method to compress it; for the other image, we use arithmetic coding. It is proved by the experiments that the system is practical, simple and has increased the compression ratio by about or more than 200 percent for most of the map images compared to the traditional arithmetic coding method
