Abstract :
A Reed-Solomon coded directly detected digital PPM system employing a PIN-FET receiver is analysed. Results are presented at a bit rate of 140 Mbit/s and a wavelength of 1.3 μm, comparing the system with an equivalent PCM system. It is concluded that Reed-Solomon coded digital PPM offers an improvement of 12.6 dB over the equivalent PCM system, when operating at the optimum 3/4 code rate
