Abstract :
A DVM standalone system from TI is used to first resize and then compress a sequence of video frames prior to transmission over a built-in Ethernet network interface for live streaming of in-vehicle entertainment movies. The issue of bandwidth-delay product and quality impairment due to resizing is compared with standard compression techniques using video clips of varying content. We observe that while two to four times better compression ratios are achieved, signal to noise ratios are deteriorated by 3 to 5 dB only and the difference in visual quality is hardly noticeable to viewers. In our setup, available bandwidth is limited to 11Mb/s. To stream out audio/video contents in real-time, standard video resolution frames (720×480×16 bits) are resized to one-fourth using a horizontal and vertical Gaussian filter. At the receiver end, the reverse process is applied in a manner that optimizes the signal to noise ratio. This enables us to stream out audio/video contents in real-time.
