Abstract
This paper describes a new distributed call processing architecture and modular protocols for supporting services in Release 2 B-ISDN and beyond. The architecture is defined by a set of server-types, each of which performs a specific aspect of call processing. The protocols are defined as application service elements (ASEs) specific to different aspects of call processing. The modular ASEs are motivated by the need to support complex services, such as multimedia, and combinations of services on single calls. An existing implementation is described and an example network architecture is presented
