Abstract :
Based on an analysis of the US Dept. of Defense (DoD) and Open Systems Interconnection (OS) electronic mail protocols, a set of gateway requirements is defined, and a gateway architecture is selected. The requirements to build viable gateway that minimizes changes to user procedures is presented. This gateway will allow DoD and OSI users to interoperate during the period that DoD is adapting to OSI protocols. The gateway takes full advantage of the MTAs store-and-forward feature by residing at the user agent level. A set of callable interface routines allows there gateway to have a minimal effect on the existing message-transfer agents, simplifies the gateway software development, allows easy modification of updated protocols, and provides portability. A summary of both sets of protocols, the gateway requirements, the gateway architecture, the mapping mechanisms for service elements, the protocol data unit (PDU) encoding/decoding scheme, and the major constraints and problems encountered in the study are included
