Abstract :
Proposes a physics-based model for obtaining a realistic animation of cloth motion for computer graphics applications. The model is constructed based on concepts from structural dynamics and low-speed aerodynamic theories with some modifications. Unsteady aerodynamic theories coupled with proper boundary conditions to account for unsteadiness, for the porosity of the cloth and for the effects of boundaries such as walls near a moving piece of cloth are used to estimate the force distributions on the cloth, which is assumed to be in a relative motion in free air. These force distributions are then used in a cloth deformation model to estimate the deformation of the cloth at different instants of time. Realistic and predictable cloth animations based on these models are presented for a rectangular curtain moving in free air and near a wall, to demonstrate its feasibility
