Abstract :
A non-linear resistor (NOR) connected in series with the Marx generator is proposed to be used to prevent emergencies. The NOR should have low resistance when the current is rising to its peak value and during the energy transfer into the load; in an emergency situation, it has to ensure a rapidly increasing decrement of oscillations up to values acceptable for the capacitors in an emergency situation. Experiments have been carried out with NIRs made of "vilit" (SO/sub 2/ with fillers) or composed of electrically exploded copper and tungsten wires. The ratio of the current with a NOR connected in the circuit to the short circuit current reached 0.9. Proceeding from the experimental results, a NOR has been designed and tested in a generator with a POS and a 560-kV, 190-kA Marx generator.
