Abstract :
This paper describes a microprocessor-based relay laboratory at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The laboratory is a partnership between Tennessee Valley Authority, Schweitzer Laboratories, Cleveland Utilities, and the University. The laboratory is intended to be an educational and research tool for undergraduate and graduate students as well as a training facility for industry engineers. Relays are set using a personal computer, application software, and a communication processor. Protection schemes and the relays are tested using a low-level test system. In this laboratory students are able to set and test digital relays, select current and voltage transformers, determine relays and transformer taps, conduct research, and test their protection design schemes in a laboratory environment. The laboratory is also used by local utilities for training, and conducting short courses on power system protection.
