Abstract :
The cranking characteristics of the engine play an important role in designing the converter for integrated starter alternator (ISA) applications for future mild hybrid vehicles. The modeling of a converter for a switched reluctance (SR) machine based 12 V ISA system has been carried out based in part on the engine cranking characteristics. Converter power stage design and component selection criterion have been situated based on simulation results from the model. Simulation results are shown for a 3.0 kW ISA system that utilizes existing vehicle electrical architecture packaged in the space of a conventional alternator. Experimental results have been presented to crank a 1.4 L, 4-cylinder petrol engine
