Abstract
A description is given of the field emission display (FED), which utilizes a matrix addressed cathode array, spacers to help support the atmospheric pressure, and cathodoluminescent phosphors for efficient conversion of the electron beam into visible light. Recent research results and the demonstration by LETI of a 6-in diagonal all-glass monochrome device at EURODISPLAY ´90 and SID ´91 have proven the technical feasibility of the FED. Some of the remaining research questions are described in this overview. Issues of emitter life and row and column drivers are discussed.<>
