Abstract :
It is pointed out that display engineers are facing an exciting opportunity for large screen color displays. It is believed that the large direct-view high-resolution color CRT (cathode ray tube) will continue to play a major role. Currently, the US TV market is approximately 20 million sets per year with 30% being 25 in or larger and growing. In addition, there is a similar size market for computer displays (36 M/yr worldwide) in 1990. To capitalize on this opportunity the author sees the following challenges: (1) design and development of large higher-resolution color CRTs; (2) material and processes to support design and performance requirements: and (3) investment in manufacturing to make products available, which is the ultimate goal of the effort.<>
