Abstract
The authors report progress made in the development of the short pitch bistable ferroelectric (SBF) LCD (liquid crystal display), including larger temperature range, bistable gray scale capability due to partial switching, and enhanced contrast ratio. It is concluded that SBF LCDs can overcome some of the limitations of SSF (surface stabilized ferroelectric) LCDs, notably, their low brightness and their limitations to LC-materials with long pitch and small spontaneous polarization. It is shown that bistable operation of SBF-LCDs does not exclude the generation of gray levels.<>
