Abstract :
The ultimate benefits derived from the utilization of vision systems in factory automation applications are discussed. Examples of rubber and plastics manufacturing processes enhanced by the use of machine vision are given. It is also argued that the justification for machine vision has undergone three evolutionary phases: (1) justification based on labor-savings, (2) justification based on quality improvements alone, and (3) justification based on manufacturing yield and quality improvements. The author concludes customers will justify Machine Vision Technology based on greater manufacturing yield, along with improved quality or labor-savings.<>
