  • Abstract
A matrix converter is a three phase AC-to-AC direct converter without any energy storage requirement such as DC link capacitors. In this paper, a new control method for the matrix converter based on direct conversion approach to realize both the instantaneous output current control and reduction of the input current harmonics is proposed. The proposed method is an extension of the PWM method for conventional voltage source inverters (VSIs). Thus, the achievement of instantaneous output current control is performed as VSIs. In order to improve input current waveforms, a new switching strategy is introduced. Because the proposed control method is based on the PWM method for the conventional VSIs, it can be implemented with a simple system configuration. The results of the experiments prove the instantaneous control capability of the output current with the sinusoidal input current.
