Abstract :
Malaysian Sign Language is the native language for the deaf people in Malaysia. However, there is still a lack of web resources available to the public to facilitate the learning of the language. Although it is estimated that 56 percent of the deaf people in Malaysian are Muslims, sign language resources that address the words and concepts that are specific to Muslims are severely lacking. This paper reviews several resources available on the web that facilitates the learning of Malaysian Sign Language. In addition, the paper reviews several Islamic-themed web resources on sign languages in other countries. The final part of the paper presents a Malaysian Sign Language web application that includes sign language modules that include Islamic-themed content. The modules include fingerspelling of names found in Islamic tradition, formation of words, phrases and sentences in sign language, and video of Quran recitation, Islamic songs and Islamic talks.
