Abstract :
The introduction of various types of 3D displays, the increasing availability of tools for generating 3D content and new coding standards for 3D has created an opportunity to introduce 3D for the mass consumer market in the near future. Optical discs (i.e. DVD, Blu-ray Disc) will play a role as distribution media for high quality 3D video. For this to be a success both stereo and image plus depth will have to be supported. By building on the work done in the MPEG organization this can be achieved in a backwards-compatible way with minor adaptations to the standard and implementations.
