Abstract :
The authors study a tandem two-machine system producing one part type. The machines are subject to failures. A policy called surplus control which features two threshold levels, each for one of the two machines, is used to regulate the production. A simple algorithm is proposed based on perturbation analysis techniques to estimate the gradient of a cost functional. It is proved that this estimate is unbiased. Some examples are given to demonstrate the algorithm
