Abstract
A general method for the synthesis of Externally Linear Internally Nonlinear (ELIN) systems, and companding systems as a particular subset, is presented. It is based on state-space techniques, and allows one to derive internally nonlinear systems from linear state-space system realizations in a systematic way and with a minimum synthesis effort, just performing a simple component-to-component substitution. Applications to log-domain, sinh and square-root domain structures are described and verified by simulation
