Abstract :
We present analysis of complicated flow fields around two fighter jets AV-8B and F/A-18C using steady state Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for an understanding of mechanisms triggering abrupt wing stall (AWS). Comparison of stall characteristics of these two different types of aircraft was one of the objectives of this study. Efforts were also made to derive static figures of merit that may be used as quantitative tools to determine the onset and severity of A WS. A companion paper [Parikh, P, et al., (2003)] (Part I of the study) addresses a similar CFD study on two other configurations, the preproduction F/A-18E and the F-16C. Results from these studies, as well as other CFD studies were used to recommend CFD procedures for predicting the onset of A WS, a characterization of its severity, and a means to prevent its occurrence in future aircraft design.
