Abstract
The author discusses the provision of a flexible work environment for control, monitoring and automation. Control solutions for the automation market based on open systems are examined. The divergence of the computer and telecommunication market into the broadcast arena has provided off-the-shelf components for many control applications. The task of the control solution provider has become very much of integrating these components to provide flexible control platforms that perform a multitude of functions
