Abstract
Satellite will be the first medium to carry the new digital broadcast services, followed by cable and ultimately terrestrial transmission. Digital compression vastly increases the number of services carried on each satellite. The cost of transmission per service has therefore reduced, resulting in an increase in demand and the need for even more satellite capacity. Success in the digital era is likely to depend on the following factors: satellite capacity; systems engineering; transmission services; broadcasters; manufacturers, retailers and installers; and the installed base
