Abstract
A number of deductive database (DD) applications are described. The range covers advanced database applications, synthesis of chemical structures, scientific data analysis and interpretation, and software engineering. A class of applications, termed data dredging, that appears to be particularly suitable for the DD technology is identified. A two-level paradigm is suggested. In it the upper (more abstract) part of the application is declaratively specified, using a logical language, and the lower part is specified by procedural code. The lower procedures are used in the upper part as evaluable predicates. The demonstrated applications range from the purely declarative, that is, applications that are logically specified in their entirety, to applications that are primarily procedural.<>
