Abstract :
An undulator for FEL (free-electron laser) experiments was constructed, and the magnetic field was measured. The gain was estimated using the results of numerically calculated trajectories of the electrons through the actual magnetic field, taking into account the effects of field errors, field inhomogeneity, beam misalignment, finite beam emittance, and energy spread. The profiles of the electron beam at the undulator were measured; the position resolution was 0.2 mm, which was less than the permissible misalignment calculated by beam tracking calculations in the undulator
