Abstract :
Automated meter reading (AMR) systems are generally perceived by electric utilities to offer many significant benefits. These include reduced operating costs, improved information flow, reduced administration overheads, greater flexibility and resilience to fraud. However, the current high capital cost of AMR systems presents a significant hurdle for any utility wishing to justify the installation of such technology through meter reading activities alone. One way of overcoming such financial barriers is to identify other applications which may take advantage of, and add value to, an AMR scheme. Assessing and quantifying the additional benefits of AMR through research and trials is thus an important process for any utility attempting justify such a scheme. This paper discusses the value of distribution automation (DA) and demand side management (DSM) programmes and their application using AMR technology. It summarises the work undertaken by Manweb, UK, to identify suitable DA/DSM applications and quantify their value to the business. Those applications which are considered most promising as a result of this work are also highlighted
