Abstract :
In some local area applications it is worth to discuss both single and integrated communication subsystems. The former are defined here as systems uniquely described by their architecture: topological structure, applied access-control procedures, channel configuration and transmission medium. Based on some definitions, three classes of integrated communication subsystems are distinguished; set of interconnected, set of distinctive, and set of alternatively applied single communication subsystems. The three classes of integrated subsystems offer various features. The most important is that introducing a single subsystem within the integrated subsystem allows one to separate different classes of traffic and to assure required quality of communication services for various communities of users. The separation of various classes of traffic causes several problems with control of traffic within the integrated subsystem. Some sophisticated algorithms are necessary to satisfy qualitative and quantitative requirements of users as well as to assure resource utilisation
