Abstract
This paper calls upon engineering colleagues to further advance power system metering technology and practice to meet the new demands introduced by electricity markets, where metering is of primary business significance at the interface between market participants. This paper provides an overview of VicPool (Australia) experience and details of the metering technology used. It reviews the requirements of an energy market and confirms that conventional metering technology, while adequate, is not sufficient. It also indicates metering technology that may be appropriate in the future, while acknowledging that solutions are not yet available. The hope is that manufacturers and purchasers of metering systems for large markets, such as those operating in England and Wales, will stimulate the innovation required to deliver the solutions
