Abstract :
Energy is becoming an increasingly important issue worldwide and forcing the world to develop more efficient ways to use energy. The emerging smart grids aim to create automated energy delivery systems with two-way flows of electricity and information that can improve energy efficiency. A key feature of smart grids is the automated control technology that allows system operators adjust and control millions of components in the system timely and efficiently. Optimal power flow (OPF) analysis has been widely used to accomplish the electrical and economic operational goals. This paper identifies the computational challenges in smart grid automated control process. Specifically, we discuss several new algorithms that speed up the computation of OPF in smart grid.
