Abstract :
A mobile distributed packet radio network is planned for the Australian Defence Forces. Among others, the use of HF band, and the interworking with B-ISDN are seen as fundamental features of the military tactical network. A proposal for the design of a gateway between the narrowband network and the broadband network, is discussed. The design involves both the gateway protocol stacks and the narrowband network signalling protocol architecture. Issues such as protocol and service mapping, signalling message length reduction, and media independence of the gateway are discussed
