Abstract
Summary form only given. Much needs to be learned about how manufacturing can foster innovation in environments of discontinuous innovation. This paper presents observations from an ongoing research project which examines current practices associated with the role of manufacturing in environments of radical innovation. Based on a battery of extensive, semi-structured interviews with product development team members in large US corporations, it explores topics such as the role of core competence, alliances (for production technology), manufacturing in the new product development process and the use of slack resources in the effective management of discontinuous innovation
