  • Abstract
Three types of high performance drives are discussed; these are a DC motor drive and two AC motor drives-a vector drive and a direct torque controlled drive. The nonlinear function approximation characteristics of artificial intelligence-based (AIB) controllers are highlighted. Minimum configuration controllers are discussed together with the classification, advantages and practical implementation aspects of intelligent controllers. A harmonic analyser using an ANN feature map is discussed and it is shown that it is capable of successfully identifying stator current harmonics of an induction motor. Results for a variety of DC and AC drives incorporating adaptive fuzzy-neural controllers are also presented; the digital implementations use the TMS320C30. It is shown that in all of the cases the application of intelligent controllers results in satisfactory performance and it is a main advantage that this is obtained by a completely automated adaptation procedure. Future research areas are also discussed.
