Abstract :
Summary form only given. It is noted that DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has significantly contributed to the nation´s infrastructure, driven by programs which accelerate the nations´s technology base. Key ongoing opportunities and programs that provide an insight into emerging technologies are highlighted. Work in the areas of microsystems design and prototyping is used as an example to show the synergy between innovation, design, prototyping, and manufacturing. In addition, the importance of developing the proper vision, some of the educational challenges for the community, and the collaborative models of research with the US Dept. of Defense are presented
