Abstract :
The concept of using the switching-beam antenna system in both cellular and PCS base stations is to increase the C/I of each traffic channel. The additional improved C/I of a traffic channel can be used for the range extension of a cell for voice quality improvement, or for capacity enhancement. What we are claiming is that the switching-beam antenna can be treated as a smart antenna. From the analysis comparing the C/I obtained from the space diversity with that obtained from the switching antenna beams, we find that the space diversity mainly reduces the signal fading of a traffic channel on C such that the system required C/I value can be lower. On the other hand, the switching-beam mainly reduces the adjacent-cell interference on I such that the received C/I can be higher. We suggest an optimum solution for implementing the switching-beam antenna system. This implementation solution is simple and effective and achieves the best performance
