  • Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of QoS guarantees for high-speed multimedia wireless networks and proposes a framework of QoS provisioning. In this framework, mobile users provide their connections´ QoS requests and are categorized into different traffic classes. A cell associates each class of service defined within it with a resource pool, which offers a way to assign priority for service classes. The proposed framework provides two granularities for QoS guarantee. For single cell, the size of resource pools are adaptively adjusted based on current network conditions, which statistically provides QoS guarantee as a whole. For individual connection, a bandwidth borrowing scheme is introduced into the framework to guarantee connection dropping probability. Each cell implements a resource reservation algorithm independently and periodically. No resource is explicitly reserved for possible handoff connection. So the proposed framework is completely in a distributed manner and the connection admission control can be designed to be simple and efficient.
