Abstract :
We have transported Gigabit Ethernet packets directly over WDM for 1062 km in the successfully deployed MONET Washington DC network. The experiment indicates that the Gigabit Ethernet can be used for WAN or backbone transmission bypassing the ATM and SONET intermediate protocol layers. It also indicates that the physical layer of the fibre channel, which is adopted by the Gigabit Ethernet, can be used as a long-haul transmission protocol.
