Abstract :
This paper presents an empirical analysis of the citations, diversification and appropriablity by using the patent pool as a value proxy. How to determine the competitive landscape in a technological roadmap is an important research issue for scientific and technological managers. Patent pools solve the tragedy of the anti-commons problem by internalizing the pool members. However, there are no empirical evidence to compare the characteristics of the pool data and non pool data. We find that the patent statistics reveal the significant difference in the research and development strategy. Although the firms still hold a lot of patents outside the pool, patents in the pool have more forward/backward citations, patent scopes and patent family than the non pool data that contribute to both managerial and theoretical knowledge.
