Abstract :
ATM is used as the transport mechanism in the radio access networks of UMTS systems. In some portion of the RAN, AAL2 VCs carrying user traffic between a Node B and its controlling RNC are multiplexed into a comprising entity such as a VP. Usually, the bandwidth of this VP is overbooked by taking advantage of statistical multiplexing gain among virtual circuits (VCs), and the overbooked bandwidth can be calculated with a safety percentile once PDF of the food on each VC is known. VC load distribution is a function of the load distribution at ATM SAP, ATM overhead and AAL2 multiplexing efficiency, however analytical estimation of multiplexing efficiency is infeasible. In this paper, by means of simulations, we examine the effect of AAL2 multiplexing efficiency on the VC load distribution for UMTS based traffic. Consequently, we observe its impact on VP bandwidth sizing and overbooking in UTRAN.
