Abstract
In this paper, we introduce the effective use of Gerschgorin radii (Wu et al, 1995; Wu and Yang, 1996) of the unitary transformed covariance matrix for source number detection. The heuristic approach, applying a new Gerschgorin radii set developed from the projection concept, overcomes the problem in cases of small data samples and an unknown noise model. The proposed method is based on the sample correlation coefficient to normalize the signal Gerschgorin radii for source number detection. The performance of the proposed method shows improved detection capabilities over the Gerschgorin disk estimator (GDE) (Wu et al, 1995; Wu and Yang, 1996) in the Gaussian white noise process
