Abstract :
A complete frequency-domain insight into the dynamic effects of a single machine infinite bus system (SMIB) parameters is provided by the small-signal multivariable analysis framework, individual channel analysis and design (ICAD).Those parameters are explicitly shown and their effects on the coupling of the two loops [the governor (mechanical), and the exciter (electrical) loops] is clearly illustrated in a more transparent way. ICAD shows analytical advantages over the physically-oriented block diagram method. In a true multivariable analysis, the coupling between channels (loops) is determined by the ICAD parameter gamma(s), termed Multivariable Structure Function (MSF), which provides a quantification of coupling between input-output channels and a formal explanation as to why some operating conditions are more critical than others. The multivariable analysis we followed in the paper clearly shows that, one-axis models are completely adequate in control analysis and design given the appropriate inclusion of damping constants in the analysis.
