Abstract :
The aim of this study was to determine land use changes in Nanjing using multi-temporal Landsat data for the periods of 1988-2007. Five land use types were extracted from three dates of Landsat images from 1988, 2000 and 2007, based on the combination of decision tree and supervised techniques, as well as manual-work interpretation. The land use changes were generated by GIS-based spatial analysis. Results indicated that urbanization accelerated after the year of 2000 in Nanjing, as a result of a considerable reduction of farm land. The development of urbanization spread along the Yangtz River, due to convenient transportation. The green land increased mainly from the farm land. Water area changed little during the period, while bare land varied intensely.
