Abstract :
A channel coding which combines convolutional coding and Mary-PSK/orthogonal multi-carrier (MPSK/OMC) modulation is proposed. A coding gain is achieved without sacrificing the data rate or occupying extra bandwidth. In the proposed coding system, information data bits of bit interval T, are serial to parallel converted to P parallel branches with bit interval Tp=PTs. The data bits of the parallel branches are encoded by a two steps convolutional encoder with total code rate nP/(n+1)(2P-1). The total (n+1)(2P-1) symbols of the encoder output are transmitted by 2P-1 OMCs where each carrier is modulated with MPSK (M=2n+1) modulation. The proposed coding method corresponds to Ungerboeck´s (1987) trellis coded modulation (TCM) at P=1, i.e., TCM with a single carrier transmission. At P>1, a more efficient coding rate can be obtained than a conventional single carrier TCM without more bandwidth required. Following the discussion of a coding form using a rate P/(2P-1) convolutional encoder and BPSK/OMC transmission, a general channel coding combining convolutional coding and MPSK/OMC transmission is analyzed
