Abstract
As proactive routing protocols respond to changes in network topology by broadcasting routing updates throughout the network, determining appropriate update interval plays an important role in reducing the routing overhead, especially the misrouting overhead. In this paper, a numerical method is pro-posed to determine the optimal topology update interval depending on network mobility and data traffic load to minimize the proactive routing overhead in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). Furthermore, an analytical model is presented for quantifying the bandwidth necessary to facilitate routing. This paper provides a valuable insight into the fundamental limits of routing performance in MANETs in response to mobility.
