Summary form only given, as follows.We present a 729 nm laser diode placed in a self-aligned external cavity and stabilized on a high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity in order to probe the high Q /sup 2/S/sub 1/2 /-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ Ca ion transition.
